Cardaver Synod

Have you heard of the Cadaver Synod? Formosus was the pope from 891 to 896.
The pope Formosus was, after his death, accused of a lot of wrongdoings, including perjury and using his powers to bend the canon law by holding multiple bishoprics simultaneously. He was also accused of illegally becoming a pope.
His [second] successor, Pope Stephen VI (VII), decided to convoke the Cadaver Synod to try him. The 9-month-old cadaver of the pope was exhumed, tried, and found "guilty" of all crimes.
As a punishment, his corpse vestment was stripped. Three of his fingers were cut off, and later the entire c0rpse was thrown into the Tiber River.
The Cadaver Synod remains to date one of the most bizarre and shocking events in papal history.
