Bishop Onah Attends Silver Jubilee Celebrations of a Catechist in his Hometown

The spiritual leadership of the Diocese was on full display yesterday as Bishop Onah graced the silver jubilee celebration of Catechist Innocent Ikechukwu Agbo, an esteemed son of St. Theresa’s Parish, Imilike Ani. The event, held in the heart of his hometown, was marked by profound reflections on faith, community, and service.
A Humble Servant Celebrated
Catechist Innocent Agbo, whose journey in faith and service spans over 25 years, has been one of the pillars of his community's Spirituality. His appointment as assistant catechist at St. Theresa’s Parish—initially under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Bernard Ngwoke during his tenure at St. Patrick’s Parish, Obollo Afor—began a lifelong commitment to nurturing faith. Over the years, he served under several parish priests, including Frs. Francis Eze, Samson Itodo, Jean Ike, Oscar Ugwoke, and currently, Fr. Anthony Eze. Beyond his religious duties, he also contributed as a borehole engineer operator, exemplifying dedication to both spiritual and community development.

Holy Mass and Homily
The Bishop presided over a solemn Holy Mass, praying fervently for God’s strength and grace to continue empowering Agbo in his calling, and also prayed for God's Choicest blessings upon his entire Imilike people both home and abroad. In his homily, Bishop Onah reflected on the parable of the Good Samaritan from the Gospel of Luke, emphasizing the importance of seeing every person in need as a neighbor, regardless of background. He challenged the congregation to step beyond their comfort zones, embodying Christ’s love through acts of compassion and service.
Drawing parallels to Christ’s sacrifice—leaving heaven to save humanity—the Bishop urged the faithful to emulate the Good Samaritan’s act of selfless care. “Every person in a pitiable situation is our neighbor,” he proclaimed, invoking a well-known hymn to reinforce the message of love and charity.

Community and Gratitude
Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Anthony Eze expressed deep gratitude to Bishop Onah for honoring their celebration. He praised the Bishop’s unwavering support, describing him as a shepherd who “feels the smell of his sheep.” Fr. Eze recounted recent acts of community outreach, including assisting a pagan family whose home was destroyed by fire, illustrating the Church’s commitment to universal neighborliness.
He also lauded Catechist Innocent Agbo’s dedication, especially highlighting his meticulous record-keeping and unwavering availability. “He is always present when called upon,” Fr. Eze remarked. The parish community, both local and abroad, united in celebrating Agbo’s milestone, reaffirming their commitment to live out Christ’s commandment to love one’s neighbor.

A Community in Celebration
During the reception, the parish council presented the jubilant catechist with a new motorcycle—a gesture that moved him to tears. His emotional response underscored the deep appreciation and respect he commands within the community.
Bishop Onah, in his remarks, acknowledged the longstanding efforts of Agbo, especially in maintaining the community’s borehole since 2003—an act of service carried out even before his formal appointment as a catechist. He commended Agbo’s honesty and commitment, recalling past efforts funded through contributions from abroad, including substantial donations from Dutch benefactors.

A Call to Faith and Unity
The Bishop’s final address emphasized the importance of steadfastness in faith and the need to resist pagan influences that threaten Christian values. He urged young men and women to return to the path of righteousness, emphasizing that Christ’s love calls for compassion, not violence or indifference.
He concluded with a blessing for the community, praying that the example set by Agbo would inspire others to serve selflessly. The celebration, marked by joy, reflection, and community bonding, reaffirmed the enduring spirit of faith and service that defines Imilike Ani.

In Summary
The silver jubilee of Catechist Innocent Agbo was not merely a celebration of years but a testament to unwavering dedication, community spirit, and faith. With Bishop Onah’s presence and the heartfelt contributions of the parishioners, the event underscored the profound impact one faithful individual can have on his community—an inspiration for all to emulate.
